Everyone wants to have skin that is healthy from within and is so clean that it glows, but the type of lives we all live, having that kind of almost porcelain skin is next to impossible. We are constantly exposed to dirt, sunlight and pollution, we cake our skin with makeup and cosmetic products and we hardly choose to eat healthy. All these contribute to our skin not looking the way it should and developing pimples and rashes.

However, having glowing skin is not rocket science and if you are willing to include a few steps into your daily life and get rid of some habits, it can be quite simple.

  • The very first step for clean glowing skin is knowing your skin type, because all your choices, starting from what you eat to what kind of skin care products you should use, will be dependent on this. Once you know your skin type, you can choose products in accordance and even when you create homemade face masks or scrubs, you will know better what to put in it.
  • What you put into your body is far more important than what you put on it, which is why you need to make sure that you eat right. Oily, fried, sweet foods might seem tempting, but they are not your skin’s best friends, which is why you should avoid them as much as possible. Similarly, bakery products should be left to be an occasional treat and not be a part of your regular diet. However, fresh fruits and vegetables should be a part of your daily diet and if possible, you should consume as many of them in the raw form, as possible.
  • In addition, you need to have a lot of liquid in your diet, because natural hydration from within will ensure that your skin is moisturised and healthy. Ideally, you should drink 8-10 glasses of water each day. You can also include other healthy liquids in your diet in the form of buttermilk, fresh fruit juices, soups, smoothies or even green tea.
  • Sweat is actually a great friend of the skin, which is why you need to make sure that you undertake activities which will enable you to do so. Run, jog, hit the gym, do yoga or even clean your house, because all these are activities which will make you sweat and every time you do, your pores are opening up and allowing an escape for dirt and toxins. However, when you do sweat, make sure that you wash your face with some cold water.
  • Take time to pamper yourself and the choice of whether you want to do it weekly or monthly is up to you. What you can do on a weekly basis is a gentle massage with an essential oil, which suits your skin type. A gentle steam after that will help clean your skin, while keeping it moisturised. On a monthly basis, get a professional cleanup or a facial, which will allow the skin to rejuvenate and look healthy and glowing.
  • It might come as a surprise to many, but using the right soap could make a big difference. The first thing to remember is that the ordinary bath soap is not meant for the face and you should not use it. Opt for a good quality facewash, one that is formulated for your skin type. Read the label carefully to understand whether the facewash will work for your skin type.
  • Take your CTM routine seriously, because something as simple as cleansing, toning and moisturising might all that your skin needs to look great. This should be a part of your daily routine and you can keep exfoliation in your weekly routine. When you are exfoliating, make sure you do it immediately after the cleansing step, because exfoliation is another method of cleaning the skin. Ensure that you use a mild scrubbing product, because harsh or strong ones could make your skin feel raw and leave it feeling dry. It is important to remember that when skin is not exfoliated, there is a lot of dead skin that tends to accumulate and clogs the pores. Regular exfoliation will ensure that all this dead skin is removed, allowing for new skin cells and improved blood circulation too.
  • You need to understand that your skin is really delicate and you need to take serious steps to protect it. Every time you step out of the house, make sure that you apply sunscreen, even if it is during the winters. Choose a sunscreen that you can use on your face and suits your skin type.
  • A change in the seasons means that you should bring a change in your skin care routine as well. For instance, during the winters, your generally oily skin might start feeling dry, which means that you will have to buy a face cream. Similarly, during the monsoons, there is a greater chance of infections, which is why you will have to invest in antibacterial facewashes.
  • Choose your cosmetics with care and as far as possible, avoid makeup, because they are normally too thick on the skin. If you do have to wear makeup, do make sure that you remove it with care, as soon as possible. Also, always keep a close eye on the expiry date of all the cosmetics that you use.
  • Adopt healthy habits such as giving up smoking, regular consumption of alcohol and getting enough sleep each night. Use natural products as much as possible and create face packs, exfoliating scrubs and cleansers using ingredients which have been used since ages. For instance, you can have a face pack which combines chickpea flour, sandalwood powder, turmeric, camphor and regular milk. The ingredient being used in such concoctions will be completely dependent on your skin type.
