The workshop was hosted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery together with Dr. José Lorenzo and Dr. Alex Ginzburg. This 3-day workshop focused on the specialized donor harvesting technique of follicular unit extraction (FUE). Nine live surgical procedures were offered along with implantation with the implanter pen technique. Several FUE techniques, methodologies and instruments were discussed including both manual and motorized FUE.
Q. I’ve learnt from somewhere that Hair transplant only works in that cases where there is no side lying chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes or obesity. I’m suffering from both diabetes & anxiety from the last 5 years and managing the same with 10 units of insulin daily and mild dose lorazepam; please suggest can I undergo Hair Transplant, also whether my anxiety could be because of Hair Loss.
A. In fact this is a very valid question and there are ample amount of myths around the same.
- Hypertension and diabetes mellitus is an issue when it is uncontrolled, if they are controlled or in their normal range after your daily dose of prescribed medicine, then you are considered as a healthy candidate of hair transplantation.
- After your daily dose of insulin if your RBS level is lower than 140mg/dl, then you can go through hair transplantation, just remember to take your dose before coming for the procedure.
- Lorazepamposes no issue with hair transplant surgery; in fact some centres prescribe medicine from this group for mild sedation of the patient.

Few days ago, I met one of my college friends over the lunch at a newly opened restaurant in the town. What is a Hair Transplant ?
Transplantation is a surgical procedure that redistributes the person’s hair follicles from one part of the body i.e. from the donor site to balding parts or the recipient site. There is a difference between Follicular Unit hair transplantation and skin grafting. In skin grafting, grafts contain almost all of the epidermis and dermis surrounding the follicle, and many tiny grafts are transplanted relatively than a single follicular unit of hair follicle. Today, Transplant is the most advanced technique of growing hair naturally. The hair naturally grows in follicles that contain 1 to 4 hair in their natural groupings. Therefore, with this method you can achieve a natural appearance by imitating natural for hair. The transplant procedure is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). There are two options with which transplant can be done.
Strip Technique
With strip excision, a strip of skin is removed from the permanent ring of hair around the occipital and sides of the head under local anesthesia. The wound is then sutured back together and this piece of scalp tissue is then cut in to small pieces of follicular units called grafts which are then transplanted back in to the thinning area of the patient’s head. This method will leave a linear scar in the donor area, which is covered by patient’s hair. The recovery period is around two weeks and will require the stitches to be removed by surgeon after one week. The most serious problem that occurs is excessive scarring, because the remaining tissue cannot accommodate the tissue that has now been depleted, and over time stretches.
Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE)
Also known as FUE, it is the advanced technique for transplant. FUE transplant surgery is better and comfortable as compared to the older transplantation procedures, Punch technique that used larger grafts and often produced a plugged, unnatural look. In FUE, individual follicular units are removed under local anesthesia; this micro removal uses tiny punches of between 1.0 mm and 0.8mm in diameter. The removal of hair will leave very small hypopigmentation dot which is not visible to the naked eye most of the times. The recipient site is prepared by injecting a small amount of anesthetic. Once this has been done, tiny incisions with the help of micro blades are made in the scalp. Then the follicular unit grafts are inserted into the incisions one at a time. Eventually the new hair follicles will begin to grow again. After the procedure, there is a likelihood that additional hair will fall out because of the stress of the operation; this is temporary and the hair will grow back shortly.
