“Don’t keep twisting the end of your plait, your hair will wither away,” my grandma would reprimand. To my six year old mind, it didn’t make sense, it still doesn’t! My granny would continue to admonish, she would tell my mom, “Don’t tie her hair so tight with so many clips, you’ll yank her hair off.” My mom would hastily loosen my braid and look wistfully to yet another flower that she wanted to add to my mane, but wouldn’t, for being given another verbal whiplash from the older woman!
Have you come across such myths about hair ?
Even stroking your hair, people in olden days would caution, would mean the end of a plentiful crown. Dandruff and cosmetic products like hair colour, shampoos were also touted as major culprits augmenting hair loss, slowly but surely. Wear a baseball hat and surely the stroking would make hair disappear, they would reason with their authority for being seniors in the family! The only positive one was that hair loss occurs among intellectuals and is meant to denote prosperity or that a balding man should consider himself lucky because he is bound to marry a pretty wife. There are many other half-truths such as brush your hair vigorously a 100 times at bedtime and you will acquire lustrous locks. Overnight, huh? What about years of abuse by not providing enough nourishment through a healthy diet? At AK Clinics we do not just give expert advice about whether you are a candidate for hair transplant or grafting. First and foremost, our consultation will provide you basics, help you discern the real stuff from the hype. It is only after studying your case will we guide you towards what action would be right; maybe only medication. It is this kind of dedication and commitment that have helped us grow and spread our wings; to be able to maintain international standards of hygiene that few can boast of. And yes, don’t smoke – this isn’t grandma’s advice, but medically proven.
India ranks high among top-notch Asian countries adhering to medical standards beckoning people from other countries to alleviate their suffering through affordable treatment, here. Being recognized on par with other international centres, especially for hair care has enabled many people from developed nations to fulfill their aspirations, of looking good, by consulting worldclass surgeons in India, at a fraction of the cost, that they would have to pay in their country.
But this factor about being economical, raises many questions about the quality of treatment. Putting the most important doubt to rest: Question the cost, not the quality! The reason why treatment is not as cut-throat expensive as it is abroad is because of reduced infrastructure and insurance costs in our country. This does not translate into sacrificing hygiene and sanitation. In fact, strict laws regulate the medical practice and to be able to compete on a global scale, it is necessary for the entire team of surgeons, specialists, doctors and personnel involved, to maintain high, discerning, standards and follow them with utmost precision.

It all boils down to our commitment to keep the trust that our clients approach us with; giving them proper advice not false promises, informing them about side-effects and what could go wrong, if at and not misleading them in any way with guarantees which have now become common marketing gimmicks; giving the entire fraternity a bad name.
A three year old in a simple cotton dress was making her way to the local grocery store, when a lady standing nearby noticed her beautiful shoulder-length hair, pinned on one side with a flower clip. A 30 year old IT professional despite a stressful routine sports a crop of healthy hair, while his not-so-young mother has given up on thinning her thinning hair. Is it genes that make some people lucky to have silky, shiny tresses without even bothering to read whether their shampoo has shikakai or not? Or is it something else, a secret that doesn’t lie within but outside the individual like a protein-rich diet that promotes hair regrowth naturally? Well, to let you in on a not-so-secret secret: healthy hair stems from healthy hormones. Which is why you should go for iron, vitamins and even gelatin, with a vengeance. The glycin found in gelatin particularly helps you sleep well while the amino acids function in another super way – weight regulation.
However, a contrasting theory prescribes going lean on the meat! The safe alternative is to avoid hormonal imbalance by cutting down on your caffeine intake. Try substituting coffee with herbal tea when the craving hits and choose coconut oil over peanut, vegetable, soybean oil and ditch the margarine for olive oil. There’s also a healthier way to cook, like not reheating oil and using glassware or non-coated pots and pans. Exercise lightly and give your body, which of course includes the hair too, the building blocks it needs. For instance, incorporating cod liver oil, omega-3 fats and magnesium to smoothen out the googlies that can ruin your beauty sleep and give you worry wrinkles. Flax seeds, walnuts, avocados are what you should be munching along with a lavish dose of oats and sea vegetables. Another easy thing to do is to weed out tap water as the chlorine and fluorine in it prevent iodine absorption in our body.
So take the fun way out: eat healthy and optimize your sleep all in an effort to fix your master hormone – leptin. As for additional help, the experts await you at A K Clinics. Try contacting us at our Delhi, Mumbai and Ludhiana centres for consultation or advice, our veteran surgeons and team of skilled medical professionals will be happy to lend their expertise.
What is it about hair transplants that make people feel they should go for it, as though the ads that promote ‘cures to baldness’ weave a mesmeric spell? Many surgeons state there is a certain risk. It gives the entire medical fraternity a bad name when fly-by-night operators make tall claims and then fail to deliver. A patient who had undergone 2000 hair grafts was depressed because of his surgeon’s attitude post-surgery. Before selling him the idea of a transplant, the patient was welcomed, convinced but the situation turned sour when the grafts did not grow. To make matters worse, the patient could not even have a short hair cut due to the terrible scar he was saddled with. The recipient area had healed but the surgeon was wrong in making the patient feel as though it were his fault. A surgeon first and foremost needs to be compassionate enough to treat every patient with not just medicines and operations but also proper counseling and adequate or qualitative feedback. As for patients, they need to do thorough research before signing up for hair transplant or any such procedure and must not consider this to be some mysterious process where the outcome hinges on chance or luck. Most factors are within the control of the surgeon and his team.
However, many times women with undiagnosed conditions like alopecia may face some problems with hair grafts.
People should be aware that as they age they will face thinning hair and not fall prey to miracle peddlers and their false promises. A transplant done at thirty years of age will have different result than one which is done later. New procedures like FUE have made inroads into hair restoration, but before opting for it, a consultation with experts is vital to avoid disappointment later. Any person going in for any kind of treatment should feel free to ask questions such as density coverage, downtime, side-effects or any other concerns like a scar. The best bet would be to seek testimonials of those who have already been through the procedure. At A K Clinics we have a dedicated team of qualified professionals who educate the patient about the procedure and dispel doubts. Our centres in Ludhiana, Delhi, Mumbai are open to people from all walks of life, who want to change their tomorrow and face it with confidence.
Our esteemed doctors Dr. Kapil Dua & Dr. Aman Dua from AK Clinics conducted a workshop on Hair Transplant in Aesthetics 2013 being held at New Delhi from 23rd Aug – 25th Aug. This conference is being attended by around 600 doctors from across the country and some neighboring countries. The most eminent doctors have been invited from across the globe to share their knowledge & experience.
Dr Kapil Dua & Dr Aman Dua trained these doctors on various hair transplant techniques. They gave these doctors a hands-on experience of Follicular Unit Extraction ( FUE) technique. Most of them were amazed by the skill & expertise of the duo.
Dr Kapil Dua & Dr Aman Dua both attended recently 2nd Mediterranean FUE Workshop held in Madrid, Spain. The workshop was hosted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery together with Dr. José Lorenzo and Dr. Alex Ginzburg. This 3-day workshop focused on the specialized donor harvesting technique of follicular unit extraction (FUE). Nine live surgical procedures were offered along with implantation with the implanter pen technique. Several FUE techniques, methodologies and instruments were discussed including both manual and motorized FUE.
Q. I’ve learnt from somewhere that Hair transplant only works in that cases where there is no side lying chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes or obesity. I’m suffering from both diabetes & anxiety from the last 5 years and managing the same with 10 units of insulin daily and mild dose lorazepam; please suggest can I undergo Hair Transplant, also whether my anxiety could be because of Hair Loss.
A. In fact this is a very valid question and there are ample amount of myths around the same.
- Hypertension and diabetes mellitus is an issue when it is uncontrolled, if they are controlled or in their normal range after your daily dose of prescribed medicine, then you are considered as a healthy candidate of hair transplantation.
- After your daily dose of insulin if your RBS level is lower than 140mg/dl, then you can go through hair transplantation, just remember to take your dose before coming for the procedure.
- Lorazepamposes no issue with hair transplant surgery; in fact some centres prescribe medicine from this group for mild sedation of the patient.
At AK Clinics, we study the complete drug history of the patient before operating upon him. One must be thoughtful in choosing a hair transplant centre and discuss complete history with doctors; with us it is a practice.
Few days ago, I met one of my college friends over the lunch at a newly opened restaurant in the town. I noticed that this friend of mine who was known as a confident, cheerful and buoyant guy of our gang has been showing the signs of insecurity. Suddenly I saw something strange, he chopped of his hair and was hiding behind a cap. He revealed that in a moment of nostalgia, he shaved off his head for a charity cause to raise some funds.
I remember him having healthy and wavy hair. Yes! He had that kind of hair that would make anyone go green with envy. He shared his experience with me; we chatted for hours discussing “How does it feel like to shave the crown jewel of your head” and it made us realize the importance of hair in one’s life. Soon our conversation took the road to explore the effects of baldness in a person’s life. Having no hair or not much hair on your head can be a devastating experience not only for women but for men also or shall we say it is even more traumatic for men as they suffer from localized baldness whereas women suffer from diffusion baldness. It has been rightly said by James Brown that, ‘Hair is the first thing’ (that a man needs in his life, if he has got it), ‘He has got it all’. Baldness directly attacks one’s confidence level and self-esteem. Insults like “slaphead”, “baldie”, “chrome dome” are thrown at them. Gradually, it develops into depression which in turn affects both their personal & professional lives.
This is the reason why most bald men start alienating themselves from relationships, family, friends & professional growth. They dodge public gatherings and social meetings. Many try to hide their baldness by wearing caps, like my friend did. They even avoid wearing formal clothing. While some who are not completely bald get their remaining hair shaved also, in a desperate attempt to look for a solution. So what a person should do in this situation? Throughout the century, so many inventions have been made in hair restoration field that it seems nothing is impossible now. Both the surgical and non-surgical methods have been evolved. Non-surgical method includes medicines & therapies like Mesotherapy & Laser therapy that solve the purpose but they only give up to 30-40% results while surgical method includes hair transplant surgery which give permanent results.Hair transplant helps not only in improving a person’s appearance but also transforms their way of living life. It revives the lost confidence, self –esteem and enthusiasm. Hair transplant is the best & only permanent solution for baldness. Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that moves individual hair follicles from a part of the body called the ‘donor site’ to bald or balding part of the body known as the ‘recipient site’.
There has been a myth doing rounds that getting a hair transplant is very painful which is not true. Hair transplant is done under the impression of local anesthesia, which makes the procedure completely pain-free so much so that a patient can even enjoy the music, read magazines or watch T.V inside the O.T during the procedure. Not only this, the patient can also resume his/her daily activities from the very next day after the surgery. Due to technique advancements, it has also become a very safe method of hair restoration. Nowadays hair transplantation services are accessible everywhere, at varied prices. But a person should think twice before making a choice here, as people often get lured by tactics adopted by several inexperienced institutions, where a patient can get transplantation done at relatively low-cost but they compromise quality over cost. Transplantation done by a well-experienced doctor ensures quality results and at AK Clinics the maximum experience of doctors promises the best quality at cost-effective price. The reason of baldness can be many such as genetic baldness, accident, hormonal changes or it can be the reason for which my friend shaved his head. But one thing is assured, with such wide arena of treatments available one doesn’t need to suffer the trauma attached with baldness.
The latest highly developed cost-effective technology for hair transplant is FUE also known as Follicular Unit Extraction. FUE is a procedure of donor hair extraction by which individual follicular units of hair are removed one-by-one and then transplanted to the beneficiary area. The cost of FUE hair transplantation depends on the total of number of follicular units required by the person. Nowadays it is not a costly affair in any of the states of India like Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar,
Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.FUE is a recent hair restoration technique available in many cities like Hyderabad, Itanagar, Dispur, Patna, Raipur, Panaji, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Shimla, Srinagar, Ranchi, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhopal, Mumbai, Imphal, Shillong, Aizawl, Kohima, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Gangtok, Chennai, Agartala, Lucknow, Dehradun, Kolkata. In FUE hair transplantation, individual hair follicles are extracted without any harm to the scalp. This process is performed with the help of special machinery that barely leave visible scars. Since each single follicle is extracted separately, this is a time consuming procedure. The advantage is that controlled and cautious extraction of donor hair is very soft to the skin and scalp. It is very hard to observe for scars even after only a few weeks. Complications are very rare. FUE hair transplant surgery is a lasting venture for your self-image and self-confidence. It is a cosmetic surgery in which the number of grafts depend on the patient’s degree of hair loss and thus the cost varies according to the transplanted hair. In this technique, we not only take hair follicles from the scalp (the “horseshoe fringe” portion, which goes from ear to ear) but also from the other body areas like, chest, abdomen, back, legs, etc. which are known as the donor sites. They are then transplanted into the bald recipient area. Hair transplant surgery is cost-effective in India now not only for people of India but also for those who reside abroad. Many foreigners prefer to come to India because of two reasons one they get quality treatment at low prices and secondly India is a tourists destination so they get to visit the lovely and beautiful places in India as well. Many cities are providing their best services at lower costs in India like Agra, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Ajmer, Akola, Allahabad, Amritsar, Aurangabad, Bangalore, Bareilly, Belgaum, Bharuch, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bikaner, Bilaspur, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuttack, Dehradun, Delhi, Dhanbad, Faridabad, Gandhinagar, Ghaziabad, Goa, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Gwalior, Hisar, Hubli, Hyderabad, Indore, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jamshedpur, Jodhpur, Kalyan, Kanpur, Katni, Kharagpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolhapur, Kolkata, Kozhikode. Medical professionals in India are very experienced and skilled and their medical fees are quite logical as compared to other parts or developed countries of the world. Moreover Indian doctors provide the combination of caring, good skilled, well-trained team with comfortable ambience where you can spend hours with music, food and relaxation without fear. One of the important factors in deciding the clinic is not only the cost but also the experience and the reputation of the doctors. Many people think that all doctors are the same and opt for the minimum priced clinic. But the results are usually sub-optimal at these places and in the end, the patient ends up paying more than double the price for the revision hair transplant. And also, hair once lost are lost forever. Few doctors charge by graft while others charge by session. Some hair transplant surgeries can take only one session, while others may take up to two or three sessions as well. The session can last from three to six hours. Depending on personal preference (of both the doctor and the patient) and the extent of hair restoration, the price is determined. Often, the grafts will become cheaper with an increase in the number needed and if you get it done from the beginners. Usually it varies from 1-5 US $ per graft in India. FUE Hair transplant surgery has become a very popular in India and is now available in all cities like Lucknow, Ludhiana, Madurai, Mangalore, Mathura, Meerut, Mohali, Moradabad, Mumbai, Mysore, Nagpur, Nashik, NaviMumbai, Nellore, Noida, Panchkula, Patna, Pondicherry, Pune, Rajkot, Ranchi, Salem, Satara, Shillong, Shimla, Sirsa, Solapur, Srinagar, Surat, Thane, Thrissur, Trichy, Trivandrum, Udaipur, Vadodara, Varanasi, Vellore, Vijayawada, Vizag, and Warangal.
Millions of men and women are affected by hair loss these days. Slowly and slowly as the age grows and the effect of hormones take over, the follicles become lesser. The hair become thinner and sooner or later the follicle dies and hair can no longer be grown. There can be many reasons for loss but mostly it is genetic. In this modern era, we need not to worry as we are blessed with a new technology of Hair Transplant.Transplant is a surgical process to get back your lost hair and natural looks. However when other types of treatment for hair growth fail, transplant surgery may be a suitable alternative.
What is a Hair Transplant ?
Transplantation is a surgical procedure that redistributes the person’s hair follicles from one part of the body i.e. from the donor site to balding parts or the recipient site. Mainly this type of treatment is used to treat male pattern baldness. In this case, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically defiant to balding are transplanted to bald scalp. Similarly, it also helps to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, and pubic hair and to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous transplants. There is a difference between Follicular Unit hair transplantation and skin grafting. In skin grafting, grafts contain almost all of the epidermis and dermis surrounding the follicle, and many tiny grafts are transplanted relatively than a single follicular unit of hair follicle. Today, Transplant is the most advanced technique of growing hair naturally. The hair naturally grows in follicles that contain 1 to 4 hair in their natural groupings. Therefore, with this method you can achieve a natural appearance by imitating natural for hair. The transplant procedure is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). There are two options with which transplant can be done.
With strip excision, a strip of skin is removed from the permanent ring of hair around the occipital and sides of the head under local anesthesia. The wound is then sutured back together and this piece of scalp tissue is then cut in to small pieces of follicular units called grafts which are then transplanted back in to the thinning area of the patient’s head. This method will leave a linear scar in the donor area, which is covered by patient’s hair. The recovery period is around two weeks and will require the stitches to be removed by surgeon after one week. The most serious problem that occurs is excessive scarring, because the remaining tissue cannot accommodate the tissue that has now been depleted, and over time stretches.
Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE)
Also known as FUE, it is the advanced technique for transplant. FUE transplant surgery is better and comfortable as compared to the older transplantation procedures, Punch technique that used larger grafts and often produced a plugged, unnatural look. In FUE, individual follicular units are removed under local anesthesia; this micro removal uses tiny punches of between 1.0 mm and 0.8mm in diameter. The removal of hair will leave very small hypopigmentation dot which is not visible to the naked eye most of the times. The recipient site is prepared by injecting a small amount of anesthetic. Once this has been done, tiny incisions with the help of micro blades are made in the scalp. Then the follicular unit grafts are inserted into the incisions one at a time. Eventually the new hair follicles will begin to grow again. After the procedure, there is a likelihood that additional hair will fall out because of the stress of the operation; this is temporary and the hair will grow back shortly.
Benefits of FUE
Benefits of FUE are a quicker healing time, far less trauma, no strip scar, and the surgeon’s ability to individually select follicular units. Discomfort in the donor area has been practically eliminated. In precise, the transplant is a process to remove the donor hair follicles from the back of your head, where the hair are not under the effect of the hormones and follicles will stay forever in the recipient area. Transplant is the most advanced method which gives eternal and appealing look to the person. No doubt it is a minimal surgical process but it completely gives natural look.
