Hey-llo Beautiful people, Recently I visited AK clinic for a Laser Photofacial, Don’t fret on the word – Laser. I know, Its kind of over whelming for people who haven’t tried laser ever . And this was my first time too, hence I am confident now that all my doubts are gone.
One – it doesn’t hurt [ A very slight sting] close to nil.
Two – The facial Doesn’t take ages to show results/effects.

Laser Photo Facial Review

About AK Clinic: AK Clinics’ was founded by Dr Kapil Dua & Dr Aman Dua in the year 2008. Both of them envisioned creating a place where people from world-wide can transform their looks. The focus has been strictly to give excellent results to the patients.

About Laser Photo Facial
Photo facial uses light-based technology for skin treatment. Photo facials are mostly used for treating brown spots, broken capillaries, and boosting collagen. The two main types of technology used for photo facials are
LED (light-emitting diode)
IPL (intense-pulsed light)
Price: Rs. 3500
My Experience: The first thing that I noticed as I entered the clinic was ” Wow, this is clean!” The clinic is very tidy and hygienic, I loved the ambiance! After some time I was greeted by Dr. Renu, who performed skin analysis and we had a chat about my skin type and her recommendations. Then we moved on to the treatment room, which was again well maintained.
The Procedure: The procedure of the Laser Photofacial begins with Cleansing, this is done to make sure that the skin is clean and free of makeup, dust etc. This step is followed by Icing, this helps in calming the skin. After which laser gel was applied all over the area that is to be covered for laser. Laser shots were given after this step, The frequency of the Laser is personalized according to skin type and other factors. It didn’t hurt, I felt very mild sting once or twice. The doctor was kept checking with me if I was doing alright or if there was any discomfort. The area around eyes is avoided. After the shots, Icing was repeated to cool down the skin. After the laser , A papaya face pack was applied and left for 15-20 mins , which was followed by a face cream with spf.
Results: I could notice immediate results with this facial, my skin looked brighter and healthier. The next day it was a little more healthier looking. Although the results lasted around 4-5 days on me.
Note: IF you want quick results, for weddings, parties, events etc. Ideally visit before a day or two prior to the main event.
Suitable for all skin types.
Rating: 4/5
Recommendation: If you have any important event coming up, or you are looking to try new facials or want to have quick and immediate results. This facial is for you! If you have stubborn marks, or patches you might want to consider a few seating of peels etc / as recommended by the doctor.

Facials are something which I find something very important for someone who is into skin care. Even if one is not really into make up, skin care is something which benefits in the long run. More like an investment to looking youthful in the long run specially when one is living in a city where pollution is everywhere so giving our skin that extra TLC is always welcomed. Personally speaking even minimum once a month, a simple face cleaning is better then nothing if not a proper facial.

When AK CLINICS contacted me if I wanted to try their services, specially their facial services I got super excited. I had opted for their Skin Polishing which is basically a skin polishing package which encompasses the dual treatments of microdermabrasion and peel. The combined action of the two treatments helps to slough away the dull outer layer of the skin and reveal younger, brighter, healthier-looking skin with a satin smooth finish. Skin polishing helps to give an even skin tone, free from discoloration or hyper pigmentation, and is also useful for diminishing fine lines. Additionally, these treatments are also a painless way to reduce the prominence of shallow acne scars.

PRICE: INR 2,000/- {with chemical peel total comes up to INR 3,500/-} + taxes.

So I felt that Skin Polishing Facial would be good for me because for the type of skin its mentioned for related to the one I have. Once I reached the clinic, the staff there were gave good service. The receptionist was quick, only had to wait 5 minutes for my dermatologist who would do the facial on me to get free.

The dermatologist’s name is Dr.Renu Kothottil and she was very sweet. She first checked my skin, listened to my skin concerns very patiently and even recommended and gave me tips on not to skip my facial sunscreen even during winter.

The whole process of the Skin Polishing Facial took 30 minutes which included the polishing facial machine the dermatologist used on my face along with the chemical peel mask and ending with a face pack to complete the whole process. As you can see from the close up picture above of Before and After results the clear differences. Right after getting the Skin Polishing Facial my face felt sensitive and looked slightly red which the dermatologist told me that its completely normal for the face to look slightly red after the treatment is done. The redness will go away in 1-2 hours time which was true, the redness vanished soon enough.

Now, was the Skin Polish Facial worth it in the end? is the main question here.

The answer to that would be absolutely yes! As you can see from the picture above in the Before and After close up that in the after section my face looks more smoother, less blackheads and whiteheads. I could feel my face look and feel more “youthful” and cleaner. The whole Skin Polish Facial felt like it was a deep exfoliation kind of facial because of the special sand particles helped in removing the dead skin layer properly.

I asked the dermatologist from what age groups can one get this facial done and she had said that from age 18 and above. Below 18 if that person is 16 then they need their parent’s consent.

This is one of the facials which you can get one day before any special event which needs to be attended. It gives instant results of smoothness and soft skin. Its been more than a week now and my face still feels good so I’m kind of impressed with this particular facial by the AK Clinics.

The clinic in Delhi is located in GK-1 right next to the M block Market.

It doesn’t take much to get healthy skin and bouncy hair. Just follow these simple rules this year and you’ll double your glow.

Say bye bye to all 1 year moisturisers

You might have dismissed the idea of a separate moisturiser for summer and winter as a marketing gimmick, but experts beg to differ. Your skin needs more moisture in the cold months, as it becomes drier, making your summer face cream the wrong choice for winter! Opt for a heavier moisturiser with humectants like hyaluronic acid, that draws additional moisture into the skin and in summer switch to a lighter, oil-free one, advises Delhi-based expert, Dr Varun Katyal. Try Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel, Rs 4,191, in summer and the same moisturiser in cream form for winter.

Invest in a good conditioner

Investing in a good conditioner should be on your priority list this year. “Irrespective of the shampoo you use, it is the conditioner which gives the follicles a protective covering and lends shine and volume to your hair. So pick up a good conditioner which is suited for your hair type,” says Katyal. Look for conditioneRs with keratin, a protein similar to crystalline which according to a new study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, can repair bleached hair. Try Tresemme Keratin Smooth Conditioner Rs 80 or Kerastase Resistance Ciment Anti-Usure Conditioner Rs 2000. Make sure you apply conditioner every time you wash your hair. If you’re hard-pressed for time, choose a leave-in conditioner instead.

beauty tips

Learn how to shampoo (right)

This may sound unbelievable, but turns out most of us are shampooing wrong. Experts say you should leave the shampoo in your hair for three minutes before you rinse it out. The right way to do it: dilute a small amount of shampoo in a mug and work the mixture through your hair, ensuring the lather touches your scalp and rinse out after 3 minutes, says Katyal. This activates the shampoo’s detergent and washes off excess oil from your scalp. Surprised? There’s more. It seems that the choice of shampoo doesn’t affect the hair quality much. As long as you use a good conditioner afterwards, you can choose to buy any affordable shampoo.

Start (brushing) from the bottom

Most hair starts getting tangled from the lower two-thirds of the strand, so it is a better idea to start combing from the tips of the hair and work your way up. “Avoid excessive combing as friction might increase breakage and hair loss,” says Dr Aman Dua, Ludhiana-based dermatologist. Then again, pat-don’t rub your hair dry with a towel to stop weakening of hair follicles, says Dr Nirmala Shetty in her book Beauty at Your Fingertips.

Schedule a lips day

Your lips need TLC. apart from your face. Our lips have no oil or sweat glands and are constantly exposed to irritants. “Simple solutions like olive oil can help prevent chapped lips,” says Dua. Try Oriflame Beauty Lip Spa Therapy, Rs 198, or Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer, Rs 149. Exfoliate them by gently scrubbing with your fingertips. You can use a homemade scrub by mixing sugar and honey. Try Forest Essentials Cane Sugar Lip Scrub, Rs 475, or Lush BubbleGum Lip Scrub, Rs 575. You can make your lips look fuller by choosing lipsticks that contain palmitoyl oligopeptide, an ingredient that boosts collagen; research shows that it may have a permanent effect. Try Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color Rs 2,199.

Never skip sunscreen

We know you know this already! But did you know sunscreen is just as important on cloudy days? Even on winter days of gentle sunshine, you are exposed to both UVA and UVB rays. The result: lines, wrinkles, age spots and even melanoma. “UVA rays can penetrate glass windows, therefore one is at risk while sitting close to a window, whether in a car, at home or in the office. In addition, up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds, so one should wear sunscreen even on a cloudy day,” says Prevention advisor Dr Rekha Sheth. A broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect from harmful UV rays. Try Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 50 Rs 499, or Lancome UV Expert GN Shield SPF 50, Rs 3,852. Apply it 20 minutes before you step out.

Shaving on dry skin

It may not be the biggest sin in the book, but it’s a good idea to avoid it nonetheless. Unfortunately, there aren’t any shaving gels in the market for women, so you can use lukewarm water or Gillette Series Sensitive Skin Shave Foam, Rs 229, or coconut oil.

Go easy on exfoliation

We know that exfoliating makes the skin feel amazingly smooth, but going overboard won’t help. Over-exfoliating removes the protective moisture barrier which locks in hydration and keeps out irritants, making the skin dry and vulnerable. “Steer clear of all walnut/apricot scrubs as their grains are big and might damage your skin,” says Dr Soma Sarkar, dermatologist, About Face, Mumbai. The wrong product on sensitive skin can lead to breakouts, redness and inflammation. Choose a mild scrub like Aroma Magic Coffee Bean Scrub, Rs 327, instead. Use it once a week and follow up with a ceramidecontaining moisturiser like Cetaphil Restoraderm Body Wash, Rs 1,495, to help restore your skin’s barrier

Wipe out dark circles

Wrinkles and dark circles can be a real beauty bummer. Your eyes require a separate skin care regime. For starters, the skin surrounding youRs eyes is the thinnest and most delicate. It’s two-thirds the thickness of skin on the rest of the face and its thinner moisture barrier makes it more vulnerable. Choose a product formulation (cream, gel) suited to your specific skin care concern (puffiness, dark circles). Mumbai-based dermatologist Dr Rashmi Shetty recommends Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado Rs 3,690 in the morning to soothe and hydrate and Midnight Recovery Eye Rs 3,378, to repair the area while you sleep. And make sure to use a gentle make up remover before heading to bed-no exceptions on this. As you get older, try a richer eye formula with shea butter or beeswax at night.

Stop being touchy

Picking at your skin or touching your face (or that itchy breakout) not only injures the surface but also spreads germs and may lead to further breakouts, redness or irritation, says Sheth.

Use a toner only if required

Not everybody needs a toner. Shetty says toners are meant to moisturise, hydrate and soothe skin, but are not an absolute necessity. Check with your dermat if you need a toner for specific needs such as an oily T-zone, pore tightening or collagen boosting. Most toneRs available in the market are alcohol-based or astringents meant to remove excess oil and might end up drying your skin. If you want to hydrate the skin post cleansing, opt for hydrating wateRs and toning lotions or just spritz rose water, instead, to freshen up a tired face.
Step away from the air conditioner
Yes, it works. Spending time in an AC room or in front of a heater can make your skin dry and stretchy. So use a body oil before or right after you step out of the bath. Avoid using perfumed oils as they dry the skin further. Try Khadi Sweet Almond Oil, Rs 450, Parachute Pure Coconut Oil, Rs 60, or Kama Ayurveda Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil, Rs 325.

Target beauty blind spots

Chalky elbows, cracked heels, discoloured fingernails, never scrubbed back-these are just some of the body parts we forget think about. Devote one day of the week for blind spots TLC- scrub and moisturise your elbow, book a salon appointment for a mani-pedi and get a back brush to scrub those unreachable zones. Try Basicare Wooden Body Brush Rs 440 and Tatha Body Custard Harmony Rs 1,040 to moisturise.

Shweta Sarawgi share her experience and give some information about the Skin Polishing process.

Hi,

Skin Polishing or Microdermabrasion is the technique that involves using exfoliating aluminium oxide crystals on required area along with suction which removes outer dead layer of skin leaving fresh and glowing skin underneath.
Almost any area of body can be treated which includes face , neck, back, arms … full body polishing.

I went through one session of Skin Polishing at AK Clinics, New Delhi. I will here share my experience and give some information about the process.

About AK Clinics, New Delhi:

‘AK Clinics’ was founded by Dr Kapil Dua & Dr Aman Dua in the year 2008. Both of them envisioned creating a place where people from world-wide can transform their looks. The focus has been strictly to give excellent results to the patients and provide them with

Affordable but certainly not cheap treatments
Maintain 100% transparency
Counsel patients to take informed decisions
Provide ultra-hygienic & infection-free space
Adhere to international guidelines

The Process of Skin Polishing:

The process of skin polishing involves Cleansing, Microderamabrasion and Calming. The cleansing process is as name suggests is cleaning the skin with a mild cleanser to remove any dust or debris from the skin and prping the skin for the process of exfoliation.

skin polishing

Microdermabrasion is done through a special equipment where tiny crystals of Aluminium Oxide are rubbed against the skin using a suction nozzle. This nozzle is pressed onto skin and rubbed slowly throughout the skin. The crystals of aluminium oxide when come in contact with the skin they remove the dead skin cell and then it being sucked away by vacuum.

Calming the skin is one crucial step after the exfoliation. As the skin gets ripped of the topmost layer it gets slightly tender and raw. Aloe gel or any other lotion according to skin type is applied and followed by a face pack and sunblock.

Key Points regarding Skin Polishing:

If you are dealing with dull, lifeless skin or having trouble with mild pigmentation , scaring then you can choose a skin polishing session. The number of sessions depend on how sever is the problem. A consultation with a skin specialist will help you in choosing perfect number of sittings.
The process is not painful but a mild sensation is there on skin and the crystal rub through the skin.
Skin might become slightly sensitive and dry after the session. A good sunblock is always advised to be used thoroughly for next 3-4 days. Doctor examines the skin and will suggest products accordingly.
Immediately after the session, the skin might look slightly pink which fades away in an hour or two.
Microdermabrasion session lasts for 30- 45 mins and has very little down time. It is usually called “lunch hour facial”.
When done professionally, microdermabrasion gives great results and minimizes the risk of over exfoliation and raw skin.
The effects of skin polishing are almost immediate. The skin looks fresh, glowing , lighter and supple. The best results are generally seen after multiple session held in the interval of two to three weeks. But if someone with a healthy skin is just looking for a general glow one session also works pretty fine.
One session at AK Clinics costs about Rs 2000.

Skin Polishing at AK Clinics was my first experience with any such professional skin therapy. AK Clinics has excelled in all my expectations. The Clinic is brilliantly neat and comfortable. The doctors are very patient in examining the skin and answering the queries. My doctor explained all my queries regarding the skin and the process in lot of detail and not even at one moment I felt she was rushing the process.

As for the results, I was pretty happy. Before I went in for the session my skin was extremely dry, flaky and had few troublesome whiteheads. After the session my skin felt extremely smooth, the flakiness was all gone and the whiteheads were ever cleared. I was suggested to use a particular face cream by the doctor as a follow up for dryness.

I feel one session of skin polishing works much more better and deeply than a salon facial which works more superficially.

Stay Beautiful,

Shweta

Dr Aman Dua’s authored article appears in The hindu (Delhi Edition) on 31st December. She writes about how to combat post pregnancy hair loss.

Wellness: Bliss with motherhood

Pregnancy is a blissful period. Usually women have radiant skin and luscious hair during pregnancy if they are careful about their nutritional status.

After delivery the hormonal withdrawal results in skin changes like pigmentation, acne breakouts, under-eye dark circles, sagginess of skin, stretch marks and hair loss. These added to the post delivery mood swings can be depressing for the mother as self esteem regarding her body is already lowered.

Hair loss after delivery can happen due to many reasons. The main factor is hormonal withdrawal. Female hormones present during pregnancy are promoters of hair growth. After delivery the withdrawal of these hormones takes around four to six months. This withdrawal correlates with the time of teething of the child leading to the popular belief that teething leads to hair loss in mother.

Other causative factors which contribute to hair loss in this period are excessive blood loss during delivery leading to iron deficiency, low calcium and vitamin D levels, poor nutrition, stress and lack of sleep.
If one wants to avoid hair loss during postpartum period one has to be careful regarding nutrition during pregnancy. High protein and iron rich diet during pregnancy take care of hair loss. Also one should avoid crash dieting after delivery. Rapid weight loss leads to more hair loss.

Watch intake of water and proteins like egg whites, soya, milk (at least two glasses a day and more if lactating), sprouts, paneer, curd, almonds (five to six soaked), walnut, figs and dal. Haldi or turmeric has hair growth properties and if taken before retiring to bed at night in hot milk promotes hair growth.

Avoid chemical treatments like hair rebonding and streaking as hair is already in shedding phase and would break more. One should be cautious of the products used. Excessive oil massages are also not good as they lead to breakage of already weak hair. Overnight oiling should be avoided, rather application of warm oil like olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil 15-20 minutes before head bath can act as good moisturisers for hair. Excessive use of hot water for head bath is to be avoided. Use mild shampoos and conditioners.

Stress along with lack of sleep can cause hair loss during post delivery period. One should try to get as much rest as possible and time sleep pattern as per baby. Also one needs to watch one’s serum haemoglobin along with vitamin d3.

Skin also shows a lot of changes like acne breakouts due to hormonal changes and diet patterns. One must drink lots of water (at least 12-15 glasses per day) along with salads and fruits. Avoid fat rich and sugary diet. It will also promote skin lightening. The so called pregnancy mask or melasma on face can also improve with good diet. Avoid heavy sun exposure like sitting in sun in winters and use good quality sunscreen while moving out. Acne can improve with anti-acne face wash and use of oil free moisturisers. Use of cold water for face wash is recommended as hot water dries out skin leading to skin chapping. Avoid facials in acne. One can go for home made masks. Regular grooming of skin along with proper sleep restores one’s self confidence.
