Que: I have been losing hair since several months now and am seriously considering a hair transplant. However, what I would like to know is whether a hair transplant will disturb the existing hair or will I need to take steps to protect them. In addition, I have heard that Minoxidil should not be used after a transplant; is that true?

Ans: From what you are describing, it looks like you are suffering from androgenetic alopecia and this is a progressive condition. When you undergo a hair transplant, hair from one part of the scalp will be taken and used to restore the bald area. Ideally, the donor area does not tend to lose hair, but there are certain unique conditions, where the loss of hair can happen. In order to maintain the rest of the hair, we would suggest that you use oral medications, such as Finasteride and Biotin. You could also use topical lotions such as Minoxidil, but all of these should be started only after being examined by a doctor or hair restoration expert. Your doctor could also suggest PRP or platelet rich plasma therapy. In case, none of these options work, you might have to look towards a hair transplant.
