There are women all over the world, who are in their 50s and 60s, but still look absolutely stunning. From Michelle Pfeiffer to Vanessa Williams, from Elle MacPherson to Christie Brinkley, there are plenty of women who are in their latter part of life, but still look incredible. These are women who have taken care of their skin, throughout their lives and have ensured that they continue to do so.
Genetics are definitely at play, when the skin looks and feels so great, even at such an age, but there are also other factors at play. You need to make sure that you eat right and have a diet that has plenty of water, fresh fruits and vegetables and real juices. In addition, you need to make sure that you keep your skin clean and hydrated at all times. You will have to wash your face at least twice daily, exfoliate twice a week and undergo facials or other skin treatments, once a month.
However, it is important to remember that ageing is an inevitable process and no matter how much you try, the age will start to show on your face. But if preventive measures have been taken in advance, there is every chance that you can delay the appearance of signs of ageing. If you have done the right things in your 20s and through your 40s, then you should be fine. In your 50s and 60s, it is all about paying very close attention to your skin, picking out the right cosmetics and also undergoing recommended cosmetic treatments.
What to expect and what to do during your 50s and 60s:
When age starts to progress, there are plenty of things that are starting to change – your skin no longer has the same glow that it used to have, the collagen production has reduced, which means that your skin no longer has the same bounce that it once had. Once in their 50s, women start to lose the oestrogen that is naturally present in the body. As a matter of fact, they have only about one-tenth of the oestrogen, as compared to say a 30 year old. It is the oestrogen that stimulates the production of collagen as well as the natural oils, which keep the skin hydrated and moisturised from within. This is one of the reasons why, during or after menopause, the skin starts to lose its moisture and starts to look dry and cracked. In addition, all these factors together lead the formation of wrinkles and lines that are deep set.
When the face begins to sag, the signs of ageing start to look more and more prominent – there is formation of jowls and there is a sagging in the overall jawline as well as the cheeks. The loss of volume actually starts in the 40s, but as age progresses, the condition starts to advance as well. The cheeks will start to sink further in, the lips will start to become thinner and the eyes will look a little more hallowed. Most women will also begin to notice lines that are extremely pronounced, around the eyes and the mouth. For women, who have not protected themselves against sun damage will notice obvious sun spots, and while these might be prominent on the face, they might be all the more obvious on the hands. It is also important to remember that at this stage in life, the rate of cell turnover is really slow, which is why the lines become prominent. You will also notice that the nose tip has started to droop and the overall thickness of the skin has reduced.
