What Causes Dandruff?
Dandruff can occur due to any reason such as dirty scalp, over use of hair styling products, product build up (shampoo, wax, gel etc) on the scalp, excessive oil production etc. However, the most common causes of dandruff are;
- Change in the climatic condition
- Dry skin
- Skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, or seborrheic dermatitis
- Reaction to a hair product or shampoo
Mechanism of Action of Dandruff
The root cause of dandruff is a single-celled micro-organism known as Malassezia globosa. This microbe occurs on everyone’s scalp. Malassezia feeds on the natural oil secreted by the scalp i.e. sebum and break down it into the byproduct including the Oleic Acid.

The keratinocytes form a barrier on the skin which protects the body from damages caused by the bacteria, virus, fungus etc. When there is excessive production of the oil in the scalp, then due to microbial action, Malassezia yeast binds to the sebum. There is the occurrence of epidermal inflammatory reaction against the microbe which causes the exfoliation of the keratinocytes. As a result, scalp becomes dry, irritated or scaly forming dandruff.
