Present day lifestyle laden with stress, anxiety resulting from excessive workloads, strong medication, increasing amount of chemical styling products have all resulted in hair loss both in men and women. Sometimes, this loss can be retrieved back by switching to a healthy lifestyle. On the other hand, there are people who opt for hair transplants. While the method has helped many to gain back their lost confidence, it needs to be undertaken keeping certain aspects in mind. Given below are essential pointers that are important to know.

What is hair transplant?

This is a process that shifts the hair follicles from the donor site to the recipient site. This technique was generally used to treat baldness in men, but today it is even opted by women patients as well. Sometimes, this process can be also used to restore eyelashes, chest hair or to fill in any scars that occurred due to an accident or surgery like a face-lift.

What to expect?

Post the hair transplant surgery, there is a possibility of the scalp becoming tender.  The patient might have to take pain medications for a considerable amount of time. Simultaneously, the surgeon will give you a surgical cap to cover the scalp for couple of days. The patient might also be prescribed to take any anti-inflammatory or anti-biotic drug post the surgery. In most cases patients have recorded 60% of new hair growth within 6 to 9 months time.

Benefits of hair transplant

The patient can get his or her own hair roots that grow leading to a natural result. Since this treatment takes place under the supervision of medical experts, there is no chance of damaging the hair roots. Furthermore, personalized care and attention are given to the patient.

Disadvantages of hair transplant

Sometimes post transplant patients notice a liner scar at the donor site which is almost invisible. Mild swelling may occur on the 3rd post operative day which goes off with time but if proper care is taken , it may not occur at all. No permanent side effects are seen in expert hands.Apart from this, sometimes  scalp infection can also take place which can lead to scarring and unnatural hair growth. Sometimes, the patient can have small pimples in the donor area ( folliculitis) which can be managed with simple antibiotics. And sometimes in females, there maybe some associated temporary hair loss which is called as shock loss.

Surgery cost and other concerns

The cost of the surgical hair transplant usually depends on the amount of hair and the type of surgery that needs to be undertaken However, on an average one can say it variesapproximately around 1 – 3.5 lacs depending on the area. This sort of medical process is not usually not covered by any mediclaim policy or insurance.

In order to avert all these consequences and ensure that the surgery is  done by a trained  and experienced surgeonsuccessful without any extreme side-effects ensure that you are totally healthy and seek medical intervention and guidance.
