There is a slight chill in the air these days, and that is the signal that winters are almost here. While you would have already invested in trendy winter wear and sufficient body lotions and moisturisers, chances are that you might have forgotten your hair. There are many people who think that hair does not require any special attention, simply because the weather has changed, this could not be farther from the truth.

Just like your skin and lips, your hair too suffers during the harsh winter months, and you need to give it some extra care. This article looks at some of the most common problems and simple tips and tricks that you can keep handy, to ensure that your hair looks lush and lovely, irrespective of the weather outside. So here are some tips and ideas to care you hair in winter season.

how to care your hair in winter

  • The wonder that is olive oil – The world has recognised the benefits of olive oil and while it might come as a surprise to many, olive oil is actually beneficial to hair as well. During the winter months, you can warm a little olive oil and use that to massage your scalp. The gentle massaging will stimulate the scalp, and the oil will penetrate deep inside, offering true nourishment.
  • Forget the daily wash – While you might be someone who enjoys standing under the hot water shower for a long time, it would be best that you give up the same during the winter months. It is best that you reduce the number of times you wash your hair in a week to one or two. In the winter months, the hair does not dry quickly enough and this leads to increased brittleness. It would also be best that you not wash your hair with very hot water, because that will lead to dryness. Use lukewarm water, which will allow you to clean your hair, without drying the scalp.
  • The conditioner magic – You might have oiled and shampooed your hair, but you cannot afford to forget the conditioner. Good conditioners will offer an enhanced level of hydration to your hair. You could also choose to mix in your conditioning oil with the conditioner, which can be left in the hair for ten to fifteen minutes and then washed off with lukewarm water.
  • Dry with care – It is important that you dry your hair with care every day, but it becomes all the more important during the winter months. You can either choose to sit in front of a room heater, use a hair dryer or let your hair dry naturally, but you need to make sure that your hair is completely dry, before you tie it up!
  • Make one day a hair day – Once a week, take the time out to pamper your hair, and offer it a deep conditioning treatment. You would either head to your favourite salon or simply invest in some effective products that can be used at home. There are plenty of hair masks that can be purchased or even leave in conditioners, which can work wonders during winter months.
  • Say bye-bye to itchy scalp – Your scalp can get itchy and dry during the winters, leading to flaky scalp as well. This is what eventually leads to dandruff, which is why you need to take care of your scalp. Your first step towards ensuring that this does not happen would be to reduce the time you spend in the hot shower, because the hot water will certainly dry your scalp. Make sure that every time you wash your hair, you oil it first, as this will offer the much needed hydration
  • Make way for smooth hair – During the winters, most people feel that their hair is getting rough. For this too, the solution is oiling, shampooing and conditioning. It is best that you massage your hair with coconut, olive or jojoba oil, and then use a shampoo that suits your hair best. Finally, condition your hair properly and you could also use a leave-in conditioner, once your hair is semi-dry. It would also be a good idea to let your hair dry naturally, instead of blow drying it.
  • Blow away the frizz and static – Winters normally bring with it static in the hair, and lead to making it extremely frizzy too. All this happens because of the loss of natural oils from the scalp. In order to avoid such a situation, you can opt for a wide toothed comb, in addition to oiling your hair on a regular basis. Wearing a hat would also help reduce the frizz, but make sure that you cover your hair with a cotton or silk scarf first.
  • Dandruff under control – Yet again, losing oils from your scalp can lead to dryness and this will cause dandruff too. While oiling your hair would be the best bet, you can try a simple home remedy too. In a little warm oil, mix a little lemon juice and apply on the scalp. The oil will moisturise while the lemon will offer better cleaning of the scalp. Make sure you wash the concoction off with warm water.

The winters might be difficult in many senses, but your hair can actually enjoy this weather, if you are willing to take a few steps. As mentioned before, you might want to reduce the number of times you wash your hair in the week. And while you might still want to enjoy standing under the hot shower, all you need to do is cover your hair with a shower cap. Invest in some essential oils and use them as and when required. Ensuring that your hair is trimmed on a regular basis will also help you in keeping them healthy!
